Fuse tools

Here is a complete list of the tools currently available in Fuse. Please check this page regularly as we regularly update our tools or add new ones.

Fuse software is available and distributed to all Mac users at DK and Penguin. Freelancers and  suppliers working with us on our products can have access on request. This software is copyright of Dorling Kindersley Ltd., for distribution only to authorised suppliers and personnel.

	Appetizer	Appetizer is typically used to create PNG assets for apps or other digital products that need these for development. Appetizer exports each smart object in a Photoshop file as a separate PNG image. A text file listing dimensions and position co-ordinates of all PNGs is also produced. For all layers in a group/folder called ‘hotspot’, no images are created, just a list of the position co-ordinates are listed.
	Archive Preview	Creates the preview PDFs for Product Archive from final book PDFs.
	Boxer	If DK Illustrator templates have not been used, this tool can be used to apply bounding boxes to a series of Illustrator artworks before they are imported into InDesign. This prevents images moving when reworking or updating files.
	Boxer Pro	If DK Illustrator templates have not been used, this tool can be used to add bounding boxes to Illustrator artworks after they have been imported into InDesign. The artwork is saved under a new name and placed back into the document on a new layer for comparison with the original. DeMap can remove the old artworks.
	CoEd Guide	Creates a file for co-edition partners, based on the information in the final SourceReport. It details the software version, word count and fonts used.
	Combo	Generates InDesign files (100 pages at a time) then links in final CMYK and text PDFs for a composite view. Typically used prior to the creation of ePDFs or for pre-plotter checks.
	Combo Harvester	Optimises the CMYK layer of a Combo file, reducing file size so it can then be PDFd.
	Combo Nation	Enables you to switch the text PDF links in your Combo file from one edition to another; i.e. from UK to US. Maintains CMYK PDF links.
	Contact Sheet (Beta tool)	Produces an InDesign document and places a set of images in a grid formation, adding a metadata label beneath each image.
	Demap	Following use of Boxer Pro, Demap removes the old map or artwork file from both the document and the links folder.
	Editionizer	Duplicates InDesign files prior to translation. Creates a new folder, extracting and duplicating any translation links needed. It can also rename the text layer and add a filename prefix.
	Exporter	Batch exports PDFs from InDesign files using DK standard PDF presets. Users can select various layer options, page ranges and whether to export as separate PDFs. Exporter can output PDFs for InDesign files using numbering styles 01,02,03 or 001,002,003 or i,ii,iii,iv. See here for some guidelines on running the tool.
	Eyemask	Creates a masking of .psd images with alpha channels. It takes two folders as input, one with the photoshop images and the other with subsequent alpha channels documents. Once the inputs have been taken in, the tool performs masking of the images with alpha channels.
	FileMaster	Offers many different options for managing files, such as adding image prefixes, removing illegal characters, replacing text in file names and folders, extracting metadata from images, deleting empty folders, combining multiple SourceReports and taking a local copy of InDesign files (useful for running tools that do not depend on links being present). New features are added on a regular basis.
	FlatPlan (Beta tool)	Creates an InDesign file showing each page of a book in thumbnails. It can be easily updated as the book develops. Placeholders for missing pages are added and a summary page created.
	Font Changer (Beta tool)	Replaces fonts in a single document or an entire batch of documents, with the desired font or fonts. FontChanger lists out all the fonts used in that document. The user can then select and replace the desired fonts.
	Font Checker	Highlights fonts that are not licensed for digital or freelance use and suggests alternative fully licensed fonts as replacements. Also checks fonts used in Illustrator files imported into InDesign.
	Fractionizer	Styles InDesign text into fractions. Numbers and slashes become a character style, which can then be amended if desired.
	GangUp	Combines multiple InDesign files into a single document. All pages are detached from their masters and there is an option to rename styles.
	Image Counter	Counts images from a single document or from a batch of documents. It generates a report file that is saved on your desktop. The following extensions are counted and duplicates are not included: AI, JPEG, EPS, PSD, TIFF, PNG, PDF, INDD.
	Image Report	Produces information about the agency and DK-owned images used in your InDesign files so that the Picture Library can then produce credits and list confirmed usage for Media Archive.
	Jacket Genie	Originates a cover file template from format information you supply. The document can export front cover and spine only jpegs for B3, and allows easy spine width updates. Click here for a demo of the tool.
	Knockout	Knockout sets all objects, text and graphics for a chosen layer in an InDesign document to not knockout. Typically only used for special finishes.
	Labeller	Labeller adds a label to each image in an InDesign document containing the name of the image. The labels are added on a separate layer. It can be run on an open document or pointed to a whole folder. It can also be rerun to delete the labels on multiple documents by clicking the “Delete Labels” checkbox. 	Layer Fix	Runs across multiple InDesign documents. You can choose whether layers should be locked, visible, non-printing or even deleted. You can also change a layer name throughout a title or standardise it if you think it might be inconsistent.
	Layer Merge	Copies the translation layer from one set of InDesign files into another. Used when files come back from translation to merge with master CMYK.
	Mail Link	Creates a hyperlink to any files or folder you have selected, ready to email.
	Make Ready	Can be used to change language, kerning and ligature settings for paragraph and character styles and all text. It also has an option to add a background layer containing CMYK PDFs (if high-res links are not available). NB: For DK-V it will also change the composer to Adobe Paragraph Composer, turn on hyphenation, turn off Keep Lines Together and lock the CMYK​ ​layer.
	New Book	Generates a book folder structure.
	Only Images	Exports a PDF from InDesign for each page that contains an image. NB: This tool has been removed from Fuse. Email the Fuse team at fuse@uk.dk.com to discuss this if required.
	Optima	Optimises InDesign links by removing unused layers and reducing the ppi to the dimensions used on the page. An unoptimised version of the images will be copied to a folder on your desktop named Optima_Unoptimised_Images. Please remember to make further image adjustments to the unoptimised copies and archive them along with the book.
	Overprinter	Sets all elements for a specified InDesign layer to overprint. Typically used for special finishes on covers.
	Package Me	Runs the InDesign package function across multiple InDesign documents.
	Prime Fix	Runs selected fixes on batches of erroneous files, which would otherwise fail the corresponding SourceReport checks.
	Prime Merge	Relinks the image files to the InDesign files and moves the InDesign documents into the same folder as the images. This is normally used after taking the book files out of Product Archive (PA). Please note that for this tool to run correctly, the images need to be in folders that match the name of the InDesign document.
	Prime Mover	Prepares final book folders and print files for archive. Used by pre-production producers.
	Print Me	Prints all documents using their respective print settings, from a folder of InDesign files.
	Resaver	Converts older versions of InDesign to the latest. Also useful in reducing file sizes. Can also be used to change the colour profiles of InDesign documents.
	SourceReport	Runs a series of checks on selected InDesign documents and their associated files. A results file (SourceReport) with a pass % is generated as well as a font report. Click here for a demo of the tool.
	SourceReport Exceptions	Unavoidable fails in SourceReports can be excepted by pre-production producers at archive stage to achieve a 100% SourceReport.
	SourceReport Illustrator	Runs a series of checks on selected Illustrator documents. A results file (SourceReport) with a pass % is generated. Click here for a demo of the tool.
	SourceReport Inspectors	Pinpoints the problems with our files that are failing SourceReport, allowing the user to fix the issue. Click here for a demo of the tool.
	SourceReport Pro	Condenses a SourceReport into another SourceReport showing only the fails, for ease of viewing. NB: This tool has been removed from Fuse but the functionality is now available in SourceReport using the Go Pro tickbox near the top left of the report.
	Stylist 2013	Processes documents to aid in the conversion of DK Travel books to the new 2013 style templates. For details on how to run this tool please see this page.
	Text Out	Extracts all text from InDesign files into a Word document. The position of the text is considered and page numbers included. Click here for a demo of the tool.
	Text Reflow	Moves text from translation InDesign files into the restyled travel documents from Stylist2013.
	Travel Tag (Beta tool)	Renames InDesign documents prior to archive. Page ranges are added along with title and series code details. NB: This tool has been removed from Fuse. Email the Fuse team at fuse@uk.dk.com to discuss this if required.
	Wordcount	Counts all words in selected InDesign files, including words in placed Illustrator graphics (eg. maps). Click here for a demo of the tool.
	Wrapper	Removes text wraps that have been applied to images and adds to a new object of the same shape on the UK layer. NB: This tool has been removed from Fuse but the functionality is available in PrimeFix using the Text Wrap On Translation Layer option.
